Statement to the PTAB Bar Association Community Against Systemic Racism and Inequality
In the wake of the tragic deaths of George Floyd in Minnesota, Breonna Taylor in Kentucky, Rayshard Brooks and Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, the racial targeting of Christian Cooper in New York, and the untold harm done to so many others solely because of the color of their skin, the PTAB Bar Association stands together with others in seeking to fight systemic racism and inequality. As members of the bar, and with our appreciation and responsibility for the rule of law, we are called to stand firmly against these injustices and work toward positive systemic change. We urge our nation’s leaders to unite against systemic racism in all its forms, unite against police violence inflicted on people because of their color, and unite against violations of constitutional rights being perpetuated anywhere in our country. In unity, there is strength.
As set forth in our long-standing Policy Statement regarding Diversity and Inclusion, the PTAB Bar Association hereby affirms that promoting and advancing diversity and inclusion within the organization remains one of the Association’s core member values. We believe that the Association is stronger, more effective, and more capable of fulfilling the purpose and vision set forth in the Association Charter if we strive toward anti-racism. We are committed to offering our support to any members of our association who have been negatively affected by recent events. And we further commit to affirmative efforts to address the under-representation of Black people as lawyers and inventors in the patent community, as well as the historic failure to acknowledge and recognize Black inventors. We hope that you will join us in this important work.
